Telescopic Spans: Adjustable and Durable Solutions for Construction

Telescopic Span Scaffolding—also called Adjustable Span—is an engineered solution for bridging wide openings, supporting formwork over obstacles, and creating continuous working decks without intermediate standards. Avanza Steel’s spans deliver rapid deployment, high load capacity, and corrosion-resistant finishes, making them ideal for residential, commercial, and infrastructure projects.

What Is Telescopic Span Scaffolding

A Telescopic Span consists of two nested MS members—a wider outer channel and an inner sliding section—locked at the required length via hook-and-pin or bolt-on mechanisms. Unlike fixed beams, these spans adjust on-site to accommodate bay widths from approximately 2.36 m up to 5.50 m, eliminating the need for custom-cut girders and reducing material waste.

Key Advantages:

  • Rapid Adjustment: Fine-tune span length in minutes, from 2.36 m to 4.25 m (AS-23) or 3.00 m to 5.50 m (AS-33) Avanza brochure.

  • High Load Capacity: Engineered to bear deck loads (workers, concrete, equipment) with uniform weight distribution across the span.

  • Reduced Labor & Logistics: One adjustable unit replaces multiple fixed beams; fewer stock-keeping units on site.

  • Corrosion Protection: Dip-paint finish guards against rust and abrasion, extending service life.

 Applications & Use Cases

  1. Formwork over Obstacles
Deploy spans to bridge service ducts, pipework, and voids without interrupting shuttering layouts.

  2. Continuous Working Decks
Create uninterrupted platforms for plastering, painting, or façade work—ideal for high-rise exteriors.

  3. Bridge & Infrastructure Projects
Use adjustable spans as temporary supports beneath girder formwork or during pier-cap casting.

  4. Industrial Maintenance

Span access aisles over machinery or conveyors, enabling safe inspection and repair.

Maintenance & Safety Inspections

  • Pre-Use Checks: Inspect lattice bars, bearing-angle welds, and dip-paint coating for damage or corrosion.

  • Periodic Inspection: Every 30 days, verify pin/hook engagement, bolt torque, and sheet-metal integrity.

  • Post-Use Care: Clean off debris and concrete splash; touch up primer in damaged areas to prevent rust.

  • Storage: Store spans horizontally on timber dunnage in a covered area to avoid bending and moisture exposure.

Installation & Best Practices

  1. Site Preparation

    • Ensure end supports (standards, walls, or beams) are plumb and level.

    • Fit MS Base Plates or Adjustable Base Jacks under each support point to distribute load.

  2. Span Placement

    • Retract the inner member fully; insert into the outer channel until bottom plate ends align.

    • Position the span across supports, checking for correct bearing on both ends.

  3. Length Adjustment

    • Lift the inner section slightly to disengage safety detent hooks or loosen the bolt-on pins.

    • Slide to target span length; re-engage hooks or tighten pins to the specified torque (25 Nm).

    • Verify both ends are seated squarely and the span is level.

  4. Decking & Bracing

    • Lay MS Planks, Jaali Walkways, or plywood shuttering on the bearing angle.

    • Install diagonal bracing under spans at 2–3 m intervals to prevent lateral sway.

  5. Load Verification

    • Perform a trial load test (per project QA/QC plan) to confirm deflection is within limits

    • Monitor deflection under live loads and adjust support conditions if necessary.
