Beam Clamps: Secure and Versatile Solutions for Structural Connections

Beam clamps—also known as Girder Couplers—are essential components for attaching scaffold tubes and accessories to I-beams, girders, and other structural members. Avanza Steel's beam clamps are precision-engineered from drop-forged mild steel, finished with robust hot-dip galvanization, and rated to 15 kN per clamp. They ensure fast, secure, and repeatable connections in both H-frame and Cuplock scaffolding systems.

What Is a Scaffolding Beam Clamp?

A scaffolding beam clamp is a two-piece coupler designed to grip steel beams or girders without drilling or welding. The clamp’s adjustable jaws accommodate flange thicknesses from 8 mm to 50 mm, allowing scaffold tubes (48.3 mm OD) to be affixed directly to existing structures. This tool-free installation method preserves structural integrity and accelerates scaffold erection and dismantling.

Key Advantages:

  • No Welding or Drilling: Protects beam integrity and coating.

  • Rapid Installation: Wrench-tightened bolts secure clamps in under 30 seconds.

  • High Load Capacity: Each clamp is load-tested to 15 kN with a 1.5× safety factor.

  • Universal Compatibility: Fits most I and H-section steel members and standard 48.3 mm scaffold tubes.

Components & Variants

  1. Fixed-Jaw Beam Clamp

    • Single fixed jaw and one adjustable jaw. Ideal for uniform flange thickness.

  2. Swivel Beam Clamp

    • Adjustable jaw pivots ±15° for sloping beams or eccentric connections.

  3. Heavy-Duty Girder Clamp

    • Wider jaw capacity (up to 75 mm) for thick structural steel; reinforced gussets on jaws.

  4. Spigot-Joint Beam Clamp

    • Incorporates a spigot pin for seamless vertical coupler extension into a tube-and-pin system.

 Applications & Use Cases

  1. Edge Protection & Guardrails
Attach horizontal guardrail tubes directly to building beams for temporary edge safety systems.

  2. Staircase & Access Ramp Supports
Secure stair stringers and handrails to structural flanges without disrupting underlying steelwork.

  3. Service Support Racks
Mount pipe racks, cable trays, and duct supports to overhead girders using beam clamps as the primary fixing.

  4. Event & Stage Rigging
Clamp scaffold tubes to overhead steel trusses for lighting grids, speaker arrays, and banner mounts.

Installation & Best Practices

  1. Pre-Installation Check

    • Ensure flange surfaces are clean of paint drips, rust, or debris to achieve full contact.

  2. Positioning

    • Place fixed jaw against one side of the beam flange, adjust the opposing jaw to the flange thickness.

  3. Tightening

    • Hand-tighten the high-tensile bolt until snug, then apply a calibrated torque wrench to 25 Nm to secure.

    • Avoid over-torqueing which can deform the beam clamp body.

  4. Tube Insertion

    • Insert scaffold tube into the clamp socket and fasten with the integrated coupling bolt to 25 Nm.

  5. Inspection

    • Verify clamp stability by applying a lateral force of 1 kN; ensure no slippage occurs.

Maintenance & Lifecycle

  • Routine Inspection: Before each use, check for corrosion under the jaws and ensure bolts operate smoothly.

  • Cleaning: Wipe down clamps after exposure to concrete or corrosive environments; apply light machine oil to threads.

  • Re-Galvanization: For extensively used clamps, consider periodic re-coating every 500 cycles to maintain corrosion resistance.

  • End-of-Life Recycling: All MS components are 100 % recyclable, supporting Avanza Steel’s sustainability pledge.
